Peter’s* Path to Home
For 15 long months, Peter lived on the streets. Each day was uncertain, a search for rest, warmth, and a sense of safety. Still, he never let go of hope. “It can be a long journey,” he says, “but it pays off if you’re patient.”
Peter’s connection with Pillars began years ago, when he first stopped at the Adult Shelter. Since then, he’s worked with several of Pillars’ programs: Street Outreach, the Resource Center, the Adult Shelter, and now Rapid Rehousing. Each step became part of his path toward stability.
“It was stressful,” Peter remembers. Waiting for help took time and patience, but he didn’t give up. When he finally got prioritized for housing, everything changed. “It took a long time,” he says, “but I kept at it.”
Today, Peter has his own apartment, a place to call home since September. “Home means a lot,” he says. “It means I can get things done and get stable.”
“Now that I have an address,” he adds, “I can find a part-time job.” Having a permanent home means more than just a roof over Peter’s head; it’s a foundation for the future.
When asked to describe Pillars in one word, Peter didn’t hesitate: “Helpful.” His journey shows what’s possible when persistence meets support, and when a community believes in second chances.
